Master your mowing routine: The best lawn care schedule for every season

Do you know exactly how often to mow your lawn? Getting it wrong can leave your grass looking less than its best but the good news is that we’ve create a simple seasonal cutting schedule to manage your mowing easily from Spring through to Winter.

How long should grass actually be?

Keeping your grass at a consistent height of around 2.5 to 3.5 inches encourages strong, healthy growth. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade’s length at a time to protect the lawn.

Spring: The first cut of the year

Spring marks the start of lawn care season, and the first cut is crucial. Ideally, your first mow should have already taken place by early March. From then on, mowing once a week should be enough to maintain a healthy lawn as temperatures gradually rise. Read more about the first cut here: When To Do The First Mow Of The Year.

Summer: Keeping up with growth

Summer is when your lawn will likely require the most attention. In normal conditions, cutting the grass every two weeks should suffice. However, if there's an extended dry spell with little rainfall, you may need to mow less frequently. In these cases, mowing once a week should be enough to keep things tidy. If drought conditions persist, you can still improve your lawn's appearance by trimming any stray, longer blades without giving it a full cut.

Autumn: Preparing for the cooler months

As temperatures cool and growth slows, it's time to ease back on mowing. Once-a-week mowing should be enough to maintain a healthy and tidy lawn. Treat autumn lawn care similarly to spring, ensuring you complete your final cut of the year before the colder weather sets in. Timing this final mow based on the weather forecast will help prepare your lawn for winter.

Winter: Rest and recovery

Winter lawn care is minimal, and mowing isn't typically necessary. However, if you experience an unusually warm spell resulting in unexpected grass growth, you may need to trim it back. In such cases, mow sparingly and only if the grass is dry – never cut wet or frozen grass as this can damage both your lawn and your equipment.

By following this seasonal mowing guide, you can keep your lawn looking its best all year round. A little extra care and timing go a long way toward achieving a greener, healthier garden.
